Political cartoons were a popular way to relay events throughout the Civil War, and now days they make learning more interesting!
'The Cake in Danger'
This cartoon includes Robert E. Lee and U. S. Grant engaged in a fist fight over two cakes. The first cake is labeled Richmond after the capital of the Confederate States of America. This gives a good image of how the two war leaders fought over the capital, the confederates on the defensive fought to maintain their city while the Union fought to overtake it. The second cake labeled White House is in the hands of Uncle Sam and suggests that Uncle Sam is showing that Grant needs to win if he wants a better shot at the presidency.

'The Herod of the Nineteenth Century'
This Cartoon shows Lincoln as a king. He holds a cup labeled power which could suggest who ever created the cartoon thought he had too much of it. A women labeled liberty is locked up and is asking who will protect her now. We can see that Lincoln is being accused of many things and from studies we know that he was hesitant about freeing slaves in Union Controlled areas, therefore we can hypothesize that that was an impact on the creation of the cartoon.
